China → GCC port & route selector
Turn a cargo origin and destination country into a transparent port shortlist: which China port to load, which GCC port to discharge, and which published route matches — with the assumptions shown.
TL;DR: Two heuristics answer the “which port, which route?” question: (a) cargo origin region decides the China loading port — East China → Shanghai/Ningbo, South China → Shenzhen/Guangzhou, North China → Qingdao/Tianjin; (b) destination country plus preference decides the GCC discharge port — Saudi west → Jeddah, Saudi east → Dammam, UAE → Jebel Ali/Khalifa, Qatar → Hamad, Kuwait → Shuwaikh/Shuaiba, Oman → Sohar/Salalah, Bahrain → Khalifa bin Salman. Published route data makes the route-time difference concrete: 18 days Shanghai→Jeddah vs 20 days Shanghai→Dammam vs 24 days Shanghai→Shuwaikh. These are estimates, not quotes.

How the selector works
1 · Origin region → China port
East China maps to Shanghai and Ningbo-Zhoushan, South China to Shenzhen and Guangzhou, and North China to Qingdao and Tianjin. The hinterland field explains why the port fits the region.
2 · Country + preference → GCC port
The destination country narrows the gateway; preference chooses default (largest/most-used), fastest, or most stable routing. Saudi Jeddah vs Dammam is the clearest split: west vs east and Red Sea vs Arabian Gulf.
3 · Exact route match only
The selector filters routes.ts for an exact origin-port and destination-port match. If no route row exists, it says so and does not substitute a made-up transit number.
Transparency rules
Every result separates Estimated, Confidence,
Assumptions, Data date and
Limitations. Transit days come only from
routes.ts, and confidence comes only from the data's
confidence field. Port selection is a heuristic — the
hinterland text is the reason, not a precision claim.
Example: South China cargo to Saudi Arabia with default preference shortlists Shenzhen and Guangzhou as origin ports, Jeddah as the default destination, Dammam as the eastern/stable alternative, and matches Shenzhen→Jeddah and Shenzhen→Dammam from routes.ts. Guangzhou has no exact route row, so no transit figure is shown for it.
Common errors
- Routing by port name alone and ignoring the cargo's origin region — South China cargo should load Shenzhen, not Shanghai
- Ignoring terminal differences — Shanghai Yangshan vs Waigaoqiao changes cut-off times and feeder connections
- Ignoring the destination's inland distance — a cheaper port can cost more after the overland leg

Are these results an exact recommendation?
No. The selector uses transparent heuristics: your cargo origin region chooses the China loading port, and your destination country plus preference chooses the GCC discharge port. It is a planning shortlist, not a live carrier recommendation — confirm the final port pair, service and price with a licensed forwarder.
Why does Saudi Arabia have two port choices?
Jeddah serves western Saudi Arabia — Jeddah city, Makkah and Madinah — on the Red Sea, while Dammam serves the Eastern Province and Riyadh by rail and road. Since the 2023 Red Sea security disruption, Dammam has also become the more stable routing choice when Red Sea volatility is a concern.
Which should I choose first — origin port or destination port?
Destination port first. It sets the customs entry, clearance point and last-mile delivery region, and therefore which port actually reaches your consignee. Origin port comes second: it decides inland collection, container availability and how easily your cargo reaches the ocean service.
Why do some recommended ports show no matched route?
The current routes.ts dataset contains routes from Shanghai, Ningbo-Zhoushan and Shenzhen to seven GCC gateway ports. Ports such as Guangzhou, Qingdao and Tianjin appear in the port heuristics but have no exact route row yet, so the selector refuses to invent a transit figure for them and asks you to request a carrier schedule instead.
